The idea...
Many of you might wonder where the idea of cycling from Oxfordshire to Australia came from.
There are, of course, many other great cycle routes in this world we could have chosen to ride and explore!
Alaska to Patagonia, Egypt to South Africa, all around the Mediterranean sea, Rivers and Canals of Europe - all routes with their own charm, beauty and attractions and I am sure all of those routes would provide an equal amount of adventure, beautiful scenery & challenges for us!
But why Australia?
Well, winding the clock back a few years, the land of koalas, kangaroos & kookaburras was the land I called 'my home country'. Eight years I've spent working and enjoying the land of bikkies, stubbie holders, barbies & thongs. And over 20 years later, I still feel a connection to this far afield country. The barrenness in some places & the lushness in others make it all very attractive to me to go back to 'have another Captain Cook'!
Also, my eldest daughter 'suffered' from the same attraction to Australia as I do and went back to AUS in her mid twenties and is now happily married to a fair dinkum, stubbie and broccoli-omelet loving Aussie! He's a bonzer!
Last but not least, in 2019 Rebecca and I spent four weeks exploring parts of New South Wales and Tasmania. At that point, Australia wasn't a country high up on Rebecca's list to visit but was happy to give it a go and come and experience a proper Aussie pavlova, lamingtons & some snags and guess what? She loved it!
As you can see, plenty of reasons why we should ride east and then cut south to the other side of the world! It's now only three weeks before we'll start pedalling....
